An introduction…

I am a 23 year old woman, and I weigh 126 pounds. I am a runner, and have competed in a half-marathon, a 10k, and multiple 5ks in the past year. I am very active, and have been trying to eat well for years, ever since I came home from a study abroad trip to Italy in 2010 that gave me inexplicable chronic acid reflux, thrush, and tonsil stones – all of which I now believe were symptoms of my candida problem. Still, I think my candida infestation began in late 2009, and though my improved diet in the past 2-3 years would be good for a healthy person (I cut back on carbs since Italy and avoided refined grains on a regular basis), I still had a large intake of fruits and starchy veggies. I also am young and fresh out of college, and enjoy nothing more than a few beers (Smithwick’s and Killian’s are favorites) with my friends after a day of ultimate frisbee. I love trying different brews, and on top of that I’m a HUGE fan of Bailey’s drinks (Toasted Almonds in particular). It has been normal for me in the past year to enjoy 1-2 drinks at least 2 or 3 times per week. Of course, now that I’m aware of my candida overgrowth problem, it’s painfully apparent that everything I’ve been drinking has been a direct food source for candida; and although fruits are very good for you, they’re packed with sugar, too. So despite my ‘eating well’, my overgrowth has been able to fester for quite some time, because I never curbed it in the first place.

This is my blog about how I am treating myself naturally for these chronic problems. Hopefully it helps others struggling with the same thing!
